The 2022 Ram 1500 received the sincerest compliment of all from three of the most respected industry publications in America. All of them named the 2022 Ram 1500 the #1 full size pickup in America. The Ford F-150 is a very respectable competitor and continues to out-sell every other pickup, but at this point, a lot of that momentum is based primarily on name recognition. Here's what happened when we compared the two at Klein Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Clintonville WI.
A comparison of gasoline-powered engines
Both the Ram 1500 and the Ford F-150 have a long list of very credible powertrain options. But the Ram 1500 for 2022 wins one of the most important races of all and it's not even close. The new Ram 1500 has an impressive menu of V6 and V8 gas powered engines. Both varieties are supported by a 48-volt hybrid system but Ram’s legendary 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 is available in a more pure form without the electric motor sidekick.
The 2022 Ram 1500 is especially dominant over the Ford F-150 at the higher end where the jobs are the toughest. Ram’s best is an engine with a mind-bending 710 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. When you get to the highest level of the Ford F-150 range, you're looking at engine performance of just 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. At the end of Round #1, the clear winner is Ram.
A comparison of diesel engines
In the eyes of many hardworking pickup owners around Shawano and New London, WI, the diesel engine is the best measurement of a pickup’s capability. The 2022 Ram 1500 has a 3.0-liter V6 diesel known as the EcoDiesel and it's good for 480 pound-feet of torque. The Ram EcoDiesel is so muscular it can tow 12,560 pounds while the Ford F-150’s diesel can do only 11,500 pounds. At the end of Round #2, the clear winner is still Ram.
A comparison of top speed
MotorTrend got so excited about the 2022 Ram that they took the new top-end 1500 TRX (pronounced “Tee-Rex”) out for a spin on their test track and timed the new 2022 Ram TRX at a mind-boggling zero-to-60 time of 4.1 seconds. That makes it the fastest truck MotorTrend has ever tested. At the end of Round #3, the winner is once again Ram.
A comparison of fuel economy
At this point, Ford execs are probably looking for an escape route and ready to ask about fuel efficiency. That might be the wrong question to ask. The Ram Big Horn 4x2 Crew Cab beats the comparable Ford F-150 King Ranch 2-wheel drive Super Crew when it comes to gas savings. It's Ram 20 MPG in the city vs Ford at 17 MPG. On the highway it's Ram at 25 mpg vs Ford at 24 mpg. At the end of Round #4, the winner is still Ram.
A comparison of interiors
The new 2022 Ram 1500 is impressive on the outside and every bit as impressive on the inside. Especially when you get into higher trim levels, the interior of the 2022 Ram 1500 could easily be mistaken for a luxury car while Ford designers seem willing to settle for ordinary. For example, the new Ford F-150 comes with an 8-inch touchscreen while the Ram 1500 gives you a 12-inch display. At the end of Round #5, the winner still starts with an “R.”
